Data engineers, along with drilling engineers, produce hydraulic reports that aid bit optimisation during the process of drilling a well. They also produce geological and engineering morning reports and logs, and teach junior colleagues.

A side branch to the data engineer is the pressure engineer. Pressure engineers work on pore pressure prediction and are generally an extra man on the crew.

A crew may consist of four logging geologists, the crew chief, the second man, and two junior data engineers.

However, four man crews are possible, where the logger will run a unit single-handed. These jobs do not require the logger to monitor pits, as they are frequently out of the unit and unable to give the task their full attention.
